Wenn man es so schreibt wäre es eigentlich keine News:

I think the narrative of picking a server based on community/cohesion doesn't hold up.
a) people contain multitudes and not just one identity/community marker
b) Mastodon needs network effects, adding more intransparent friction is dumb
C) communities change over time so who gets to decide what still works?

Blocking whole servers works for a few problems but for many it doesn't.

Twitter users are all like “I don’t know if I can trust a bunch of career sysadmins and network engineers to run their own Mastodon instances” — meanwhile Elon is just running around the Twitter data center going “what’s this button do?”

Warum sprechen wir eigentlich von "Aufstockenden HartzIV'lern" und nicht von "Lohnsubventionierten Arbeitgebern"? Denn Letzteres ist es genau genommen, wenn sich Arbeitnehmer:innen zusätzlich zum Lohn Geld vom Amt holen müssen, weil das Einkommen so niedrig ist.

There was once a dream of a decentralised web.

As recently as a decade ago we had a still very active blogosphere, connected via blogrolls and RSS. Specialised web forums were still mainstream and messenger apps could largely interoperate.

Centralised social media slowly ate that dream. It had plenty of positives, but it pulled more and more people away from the open web and into corporate walled gardens.

Some people kept the dream of decentralisation alive. And now you are here.

I have a PoC for Mastodon to NNTP running. Now the timelines make a lot more sense to me.

Before you book a .social domain, maybe do some due diligence on who owns and manages that top level domain.

And decide that a social.<yourdomain>.<tld> is cheaper and better for a lot of reasons. Just because there is a <knownname>.social doesn't mean I trust it to be owned by the right people and not some dmainsquatters.

Stick to what you have and many people already know and trust :)
