So in the Fediverse, you have three timelines and four ways to post and they have jack shit to do with one another.

What I an looking for:

A) post everywhere except local. Will „unlisted“ achieve this, or will I also disappear from „federated?“

B) post locally only; NOT to federated followers.

Last question: why would anyone read „federated?“

What I am trying to achieve:

a) Post publicly without being subject to "the family's living room" rules
(apparently not possible – has to be "unlisted")

b) discuss the "living room rules" *in* the living room without worldwide attention
(apparently not possible – has to be "public")

Isn't the concept of a federated, public service like Mastodon being some family's living room the main failed idea here? Usually, I don't let strangers camp in *my* living room, therefore I kind of lack understanding in this analogy of a public space being the living room of other people at the same time.
