So, I had largely told people "It doesn't matter which mastodon server you go to, everything is federated."

But it seems like, in at least one particular way, this is not true.

When looking at post engagement metrics in your "home" instance, it largely does not include stats from federated instances; only your local one.

This means that the engagement stats, and list of engagements, are just wrong unless you navigate directly to the post?

@crschmidt It's not only that; your single user instance's local timeline is kind of boring. Hashtags are basically useless, as they seem(?) to be only recognized from federated content (i. e. toots/boots of those I follow).

Right now, running an instance seems to be rather futile actually, unless you *want* to stay within a *very* tight bubble?

@wusel I mean, my goal in general is "own my content"; running my own instance is part of owning my own content/space, combined with wanting to be free to experiment freely with e.g. accounts + automation without thinking about gumming up the works on some other person's home.

I'll admit it's a lot of pain for little gain, but being a giant nerd means that I'm still motivated to do so.

@crschmidt Same here; besides, IMHO that's how things are supposed to be in an environment of Interconnected Networks (aka The Internet).

But from what I experience so far, (Mastodon) instances aren't equal, your view into the Fediverse much differs on the size of the local instance. E. g. I barely doubt that my instance's trends reflect what "the Fediverse" is talking about ...

But then, maybe there isn't "the Fediverse" at all as such. Still kinda ;)
